Roger L. Watson founded our firm as Watson & Associates in 1960. Roger began helping clients with their taxes, while working from his home. Later he started a second business, an equipment rental company, and began preparing client’s returns from the back office of the equipment rental center. No matter what challenges his clients were facing, Roger had a unique ability to help them through the situation and help them end up in a much better position.

Although Roger had several different businesses throughout his life (e.g. clothing store, recycling center, computer company, retail farm market, construction company, etc.) he found that his tax and advisory services were the most personally rewarding because he loved helping people keep their hard earned money. Roger focused on his tax accounting and investment advisory services and grew our organization from a back office in a rental equipment center to a firm that helps more then 1,600 clients a year.

In 2001, with a growing firm, and considering retirement in the future, Roger brought on Michael Reid to help him provide great services to a growing client base and put someone in place for his clients as Roger slowly transitioned into retirement. Within a few short years Mike became a shareholder in the firm and had developed relationships with the clients that he continues to develop today.

Then in 2006, Roger and Mike decided to add additional experience and services to the firm when they asked Justin Mohler to join the firm. Justin brought a unique experience to the firm as he left one of the largest public accounting firms in the country, as a State and Local Tax consultant, to become a shareholder in Watson Associates.

Sadly, in 2007, Roger Watson passed away, leaving behind a legacy of great client service, and always going the extra mile for his clients. Mike and Justin picked up where Roger left off and continue his legacy to this day.

Since Rogers passing, Mike and Justin became the sole shareholders of the firm and in 2010 brought on Justin Staten as a shareholder to manage the investment business and become the Chief Operating Officer of the firm.

In 2011, with the expansion of the firm into new markets, and the expansion of services offered, the extremely difficult decision was made to re-brand the firm, and the name of the firm was changed to Reid Mohler Staten, Inc. Although the name has changed, many of Roger’s values are alive and well at Reid Mohler Staten, Inc today. He believed in straight talk and being honest with clients. He also understood that hard work created opportunities for those willing to make the sacrifice. His entrepreneurial spirit helps guide us each and every day. Most of all; his deep desire and passion to help clients be successful will always be part of his legacy and the moral fiber of our organization.
